Planning is underway for a new roundabout at the three-way intersection of Rosendale and River Roads in Niskayuna, NY.

Design of the roundabout is intended to reduce traffic congestion and improve safety for drivers accessing nearby schools and businesses along with residential commuters. Working with Barton & Loguidice, AKRF prepared the project’s traffic analyses as part of the preliminary engineering design related to the $1.8 million Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality improvement grant awarded to Schenectady County.

Alternatives were considered as part of this intersection redesign, including signalization of the intersection, maintaining stop control, and conversion to a roundabout. We used Vissim microsimulation software to analyze various conditions and time periods and provide operational metrics and animations for public hearings.
