Amtrak and New Jersey Transit are partnering in constructing the Portal North Bridge across the Hackensack River.

The new two-track, fixed-structure railroad bridge will replace the century-old Portal Bridge. AKRF contributed to all planning, design, and engineering phases of this $1.8 billion project, which celebrated its groundbreaking in 2022.

We led the preparation of a NEPA Environmental Impact Statement and secured environmental permits for the project. These included permits and approvals from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and New Jersey Meadowlands Commission.

We also performed site selection and conceptual design oversight for the required tidal wetland mitigation for the project. The first of three arches for the Portal North Bridge was installed in November 2024.
