Gowanus Canal CSO Facilities Project
Construction began in 2023 on the Gowanus Canal combined sewer overflow facilities in Brooklyn.
This large-scale CSO infrastructure and facilities project which will construct 8-million-gallon and 4-million-gallon underground storage tanks, two headhouse buildings, and 3.6 acres of new public waterfront open space and amenities.
The Gowanus Canal was designated as a Superfund site by the EPA in 2010, and the Record of Decision in 2013 mandated the construction of these facilities, among other remedies. AKRF led preparation of the CEQR Environmental Impact Statement and Uniform Land Use Review Procedure applications as part of the Hazen and Sawyer team, and we continue to lead the permitting efforts as part of the consultant team.
AKRF also conducted an analysis to quantify potential acquisition costs for privately owned sites considered as potential locations for the CSO tanks.
