Frelinghuysen Arboretum Trails and Meadow Restoration
The historic Frelinghuysen Arboretum was originally the private summer estate of George and Sara Frelinghuysen and known as Whippany Farm.
The Morris County Park Commission retained AKRF to design trail and site improvements at the historic 124-acre property in New Jersey. Our work included the design of 16 acres of native meadow restoration, 1.5 miles of trails, and 600 linear feet of streambank stabilization.
We obtained full freshwater wetlands and flood hazard area permitting for the project and engineered the streambank stabilization by using soil bio-engineering techniques. AKRF worked with NJDEP and Morris County to develop material choices and limits of disturbance that met permit compliance and maintained the desired aesthetic and durability.

Growth of Recreational Space
Through the master plan, Frelinghuysen Arboretum now has five trails spanning over 1.5 miles. Supporting funds from a Green Acres Local Government Stewardship Grant aided in the Morris County Park Commission’s restoration of the meadows and streambank.
