The Mary McLeod Bethune School in Philadelphia celebrated the opening of its new community schoolyard in 2024.

The design by OLIN and Studio Ludo activates the entire schoolyard with a combination of recreational, play, and natural outdoor learning spaces. Site improvements include play equipment, a basketball court, turf field, outdoor classroom, and rain gardens and subsurface storage to capture stormwater runoff.

Working on behalf of Trust for Public Land, AKRF led the design of green stormwater infrastructure and regulatory permitting requirements. The schoolyard will serve as an educational tool for students addressing climate resiliency through green stormwater management.
