Brooklyn Bridge Park
Brooklyn Bridge Park is among the most celebrated landscape design projects in New York City history.
AKRF first prepared the SEQRA Environmental Impact Statement for the transformation by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates of six obsolete piers and a defunct shipping and storage complex into the 1.3-mile, 85-acre Brooklyn Bridge Park along the East River waterfront.
We addressed the effect of in-water construction activities on the East River habitat, noise impacts to sensitive receptors both in and near the park, and potential impacts to the area’s numerous historic districts and landmarks, among other key issues.
We proceeded to secure all permits, design stormwater management, test and remediate hazardous materials, investigate and document archaeological and architectural resources, and develop mitigation measures to alleviate or reduce adverse effects to water quality and natural resources.

Contributing to operation and maintenance of the park
In 2022, a critical $115 million preventative maintenance project for which AKRF provided permitting services was completed at Brooklyn Bridge Park to protect and preserve the four piers encompassing approximately 13,000 timber wood piles upon which about one-third of the park was built.
